India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal proposes an India-Japan ‘Shark Tank’-style series to boost startup investment and deepen bilateral business ties.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal proposed an India-Japan startup pitching series, styled after the popular ‘Shark Tank‘ format, on Wednesday. This initiative aims to connect young startups from both nations with investors and potential business partners.

Connecting Capital & Ideas

Goyal stated these virtual sessions would leverage digital connectivity to facilitate greater interaction. Indian startups could pitch ideas to Japanese investors, while Japanese startups could seek partners and business opportunities in India.

  • Indian startups pitch to Japanese investors.
  • Japanese startups seek partners and business opportunities in India.
  • Deepen commercial ties between the two countries.
  • Move beyond initial pitches towards actual business collaboration.
  • Lead to more business connections, pilots, investment, and scale.

Patient Capital & Deeptech

The minister extended an invitation to Japanese businesses and startups to work with India, highlighting that stronger economic cooperation would create broader opportunities for prosperity. He specifically invited Japan’s “patient” capital and precision engineering to partner with Indian firms.

Goyal suggested a “Japan-India deeptech capital corridor” to provide larger pools of patient capital for early-stage funding. India, he added, offers a complete range from design to large-scale deployment, providing a market for testing, selling, and deploying products. He also recommended increasing cooperation between universities, incubators, and venture funds.
