India Infra Projects: Rs 3.4 Lakh Crore Cost Overruns
By ThePip Desk
India’s major infrastructure projects face staggering Rs 3.4 lakh crore cost overruns, impacting national development initiatives. MoSPI report details.
India’s infrastructure projects, each valued above Rs 150 crore, have collectively reported significant cost overruns totaling around Rs 3,40,504 crore. This data comes from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in its monthly report for July 2026.
Monitoring India’s Project Landscape
The MoSPI report monitored 1,775 ongoing infrastructure projects, spanning across 17 different Central Ministries and Departments. These projects represent a substantial portion of the nation’s development initiatives.
The financial scale of these projects highlights the extent of the overruns:
- Original aggregated project cost: Rs 33,70,138 crore
- Total revised aggregated project cost: Rs 37,10,642 crore
- Cumulative expenditure incurred: Rs 19.26 lakh crore, representing 51.91 per cent of the revised cost.
Understanding Project Progress and Scale
While the report did not specify the exact number of individual projects experiencing overruns, it provided insights into their physical and financial advancement. A significant number of projects are nearing completion.
The 1,775 projects were further categorised by their initial cost:
- 735 Mega projects: Each costing Rs 1,000 crore or above, with an original collective cost of Rs 28.77 lakh crore.
- 1,040 Major projects: Each costing below Rs 1,000 crore but up to Rs 150 crore, with an original collective cost of Rs 4.93 lakh crore.
Progress indicators show varied stages of development across the portfolio:
- 675 projects (38 per cent) have achieved over 80 per cent physical progress.
- 305 projects (17 per cent) have crossed 80 per cent financial completion.
The figures from MoSPI underscore the financial challenges in large-scale infrastructure development. Despite significant expenditures and advanced progress in many projects, the cumulative cost overruns present a notable economic consideration for future planning and execution.
