India has taken a decisive step towards defense self-reliance with the successful completion of firing tests for its first fully indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, named “Sher.” Manufactured at the Korwa facility in Amethi, this achievement marks a significant milestone for the Indo-Russian joint venture.
Major General S.K. Sharma, chief of Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), confirmed that every component and input material for this prototype originates from Indian industry. This signifies “true, end-to-end” indigenisation, a critical development for the nation’s strategic capabilities.
The “Sher” rifle is now poised for formal Indian Army trials, expected to commence next month. These trials will be crucial in determining its future deployment and integration into the armed forces.
