India Inc has strongly backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for a ‘self-reliant India’ (Atmanirbhar Bharat), articulated during his Independence Day address. Industry leaders conveyed significant confidence in the government’s economic growth vision and their collective readiness to contribute to its implementation.
These announcements are expected to stimulate investment, employment, innovation, and manufacturing. The industry anticipates these measures will bolster India’s self-reliance while enhancing its global competitiveness.
Key Industry Voices Backing the Vision
R Mukundan, President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), highlighted Modi’s ‘Sapta Dhara’ (seven streams) framework. This framework aims to guide India towards self-reliance and achieve a developed nation status by 2047.
Chandrajit Banerjee, CII Director General, elaborated that Modi’s vision prioritizes people, sustainability, and India’s global strengths. He noted India’s transition from the ‘Fragile Five’ to the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
Banerjee identified substantial opportunities within agriculture and food processing sectors. Expanded market access through free trade agreements could help Indian farm products, particularly millets, spices, fruits, and flowers, establish global brands.
He further emphasized the critical roles of nuclear energy, semiconductors, and the green and blue economies in driving India’s growth over the next decade. Strengthening India’s global economic presence through its soft power also remains a key focus.
Nirmal Kumar Minda, President of Assocham, echoed these sentiments regarding the ‘Sapta Dhara’. He stated it offers a broad-based approach for inclusive, sustainable, and accelerated development.
Minda underscored the importance of self-reliance, ‘Vocal for Local,’ domestic manufacturing, and strategic capabilities. These elements are seen as crucial for enhancing India’s overall economic resilience.
Understanding the ‘Sapta Dhara’ Framework
Modi’s ‘Sapta Dhara’ framework outlines several key areas for national development. These streams are designed to synergize efforts across various sectors.
The framework encompasses manufacturing, power, and agriculture and food processing. It also includes technology and innovation, Gatishakti, and defence power.
Further elements are the green and blue economies, alongside soft power. The Prime Minister also called for a robust civil defense infrastructure, aiming to establish India as a global hub for defense manufacturing.
He stressed the need for self-reliance in advanced capabilities such as hypersonic technology and drone systems. Additionally, initiatives for free online coaching for competitive examinations were announced to ease financial burdens on poor and middle-class families.
Implications for Future Growth
The collective endorsement from India Inc signifies strong private sector alignment with the government’s long-term economic strategy. This unified approach could pave the way for accelerated progress across critical sectors, fostering both domestic strength and global competitiveness.
