India Penalizes Hospitals Under Ayushman Bharat Scheme

The Indian government has initiated stringent actions against healthcare providers, de-empanelling 2,359 hospitals and suspending another 1,200 under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). These measures, effective as of May 31, 2026, address significant violations of the scheme’s established guidelines.

J P Nadda, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, announced this decisive move in the Lok Sabha on August 7, 2026, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance against fraudulent activities within the national health scheme.

Enforcement and Penalties

The government’s enforcement efforts extend beyond de-empanelment and suspension. Authorities have lodged 29 First Information Reports (FIRs) against violators to ensure legal accountability.

Financial penalties totaling Rs 323.49 crore have also been imposed on these institutions. This dual approach aims to recover misappropriated funds and uphold the integrity of the AB-PMJAY scheme.

AI-Powered Fraud Detection

A crucial component of these enforcement actions is the sophisticated anti-fraud system employed by the National Health Authority (NHA). This advanced AI/ML-based system is designed to identify suspicious claims efficiently.

It flags irregularities such as duplicate entries or the misuse of patient identities within 24 hours of submission. This technological intervention has already led to substantial savings, amounting to Rs 676.14 crore by July 31, 2026.

Scheme Scope and Recent Activity

The Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana provides cashless health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year, encompassing over 1,900 distinct medical procedures. It serves as a vital safety net for millions across the nation.

During the financial year 2025-26, the scheme saw significant expansion and utilization. Key figures include the creation of 37.50 million new Ayushman cards and the authorization of 27.40 million hospital admissions.

Central funds amounting to Rs 8,438.27 crore were released to state health agencies during this period. Currently, the AB-PMJAY scheme has 38,437 empanelled hospitals, comprising both public and private facilities.

State-Level Performance

Certain states demonstrated leading performance in the scheme’s implementation. Maharashtra recorded the highest number of new Ayushman cards created.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh led in the total number of authorized hospital admissions. Uttar Pradesh also received the largest share of central funds since the inception of the AB-PMJAY scheme.
