India Boosts Defence: DRDO Missile Tech Transfer to Local Firms

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has sanctioned the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to qualified Indian defence companies. This significant decision, announced by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, aims to boost domestic production and reduce India’s reliance on imports.

The initiative seeks to increase the involvement of local firms, particularly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), within the defence supply chain. Eligible Indian companies can now produce DRDO-developed conventional missile systems through knowledge transfer, provided they meet strict certifications, qualifications, and legal requirements.

Accelerating Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence

This move represents a crucial step in the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) push for the defence sector. It will facilitate the transition of missile systems from the development phase to industrial-scale production.

The decision also aims to strengthen India’s domestic defence industrial base and broaden participation in the missile manufacturing ecosystem. This aligns with the defence ministry’s wider strategy to open up missile, artillery shell, ammunition, and ordnance development to the private sector.

Strategic Context and Regional Dynamics

The approval comes amid increasing integration of missile capabilities with surveillance, communication, and precision-strike networks in India’s neighbourhood. A July analysis by the Centre for Aerospace Power and Strategic Studies highlighted the rapid expansion of Pakistan’s space capabilities.

The analysis noted that Pakistan’s Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) had launched six satellites in 16 months, following decades of slower progress. Pakistan is actively working to strengthen its autonomous space-based surveillance and integrate satellite intelligence with terrestrial communication systems.

This Indian initiative, therefore, not only focuses on economic self-reliance but also holds strategic importance in the evolving regional security landscape. It underscores a proactive approach to enhancing national defence capabilities through indigenous development and production.
