By ThePip Desk
India’s net direct tax collection jumped 23.09% to ₹8.11 lakh crore by Aug 10, FY27, fueled by strong corporate and personal income tax growth.
India’s net direct tax collections have seen a significant increase, rising by 23.09 per cent to over Rs 8.11 lakh crore as of August 10 in the current fiscal year (FY27). This growth highlights robust revenue generation for the government early in the financial period.
Breaking Down the Direct Tax Inflow
The overall net direct tax collection comprises contributions from both corporate and non-corporate sectors. Corporate tax collections, reflecting company profits, saw substantial growth during this period.
- Net corporate tax collections reached approximately Rs 2.70 lakh crore, marking a 19.83 per cent increase.
- Net non-corporate tax collections, which include personal income tax, grew by 23 per cent to Rs 5.07 lakh crore.
Securities Transaction Tax Sees Sharp Rise
Beyond the primary direct taxes, revenues from the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) also experienced a notable surge. This indicates heightened activity in the securities market.
- STT revenues climbed by 51 per cent, amounting to Rs 33,824 crore by August 10.
Alongside collections, the government also processed a substantial volume of refunds. These refunds represent adjustments for excess tax paid by individuals and corporations.
- Refunds issued between April 1 and August 10 totaled Rs 1.43 lakh crore.
- This figure represents a 3.8 per cent growth compared to the same period last year.
Gross Collections and Fiscal Targets
When considering gross direct tax collection, which encompasses corporate tax, personal income tax, and STT before refunds, the figures also show strong momentum. This broad metric provides a comprehensive view of tax receipts.
- Gross direct tax collection recorded a 19.75 per cent growth, reaching around Rs 9.55 lakh crore until August 10.
These collection figures are particularly relevant in the context of the government’s ambitious fiscal targets for the current financial year. The budgeted amounts reflect expectations for continued economic activity and compliance.
- The government aims to collect Rs 26.97 lakh crore from direct taxes in FY27.
- This target represents a 15 per cent increase over the Rs 23.40 lakh crore collected in FY26.
The robust growth in net direct tax collections, alongside strong STT revenues, positions the government favorably towards achieving its direct tax revenue targets for FY27. Continued vigilance on these figures will be crucial for broader fiscal health.
