India’s aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), recorded 889 serious technical defects in flights during 2025. This figure marks a significant increase from the 692 faults reported in 2024.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol disclosed these statistics in the Lok Sabha on August 6, responding to queries from Congress member Shyamkumar Daulat Barve. He emphasized the DGCA’s established framework for ensuring safe aircraft operations.
DGCA’s Regulatory Framework for Aviation Safety
The DGCA establishes comprehensive Civil Aviation Requirements (CARs), alongside safety advisories, directives, and other regulatory instructions. These guidelines are crucial for maintaining consistent safety standards across the aviation sector.
Systematic Oversight and Compliance Monitoring
To ensure operators comply with these stringent regulations, the DGCA implements a systematic safety oversight mechanism. This process meticulously covers all aircraft and airport operators within India.

Rising Enforcement Actions Against Violators
Beyond monitoring, the DGCA has significantly increased its enforcement actions against airlines and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) organizations. In 2025, action was initiated in 42 instances, marking a rise from 31 cases in 2024.
