India Defence Sector: Rs 1.53 Lakh Crore Orders Incoming

India’s defence sector stands on the cusp of a significant transformation with three major procurement programmes collectively valued at an estimated Rs 1.53 lakh crore. These initiatives are poised to reshape the nation’s defence ordering cycle, as identified by Antique Stock Broking.

Key Defence Programmes Await Approval

The anticipated orders include the P-75I submarine programme, the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system, and the Next-Generation Corvette (NGC) programme. Despite a 17% decrease in order inflows for listed defence companies in FY26, these projects are expected to be placed in the near term.

The P-75I conventional submarine programme, estimated at Rs 90,000 crore, is likely to be awarded to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. This could significantly boost Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders’ order book, potentially reaching Rs 1.3-1.4 lakh crore, which is more than seven times its current value.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders’ future pipeline also encompasses several large projects. These include P17B Frigates worth Rs 70,000 crore, Mine Counter Measure Vessels valued at Rs 40,000 crore, Landing Platform Docks for Rs 40,000 crore, and Destroyers around Rs 48,000 crore. Such additions could increase its total order funnel to over Rs 2.9 lakh crore.

Missile Systems and Naval Vessels

The QRSAM system, valued at approximately Rs 30,000 crore, is projected to be primarily secured by Bharat Electronics. Finalization for this system is anticipated by Q2FY27.

Bharat Dynamics Ltd is also expected to benefit from the QRSAM programme, potentially generating Rs 12,000 crore in revenue from component supply. Bharat Electronics further aims to convert about $300 million in export opportunities into orders during FY27, alongside its involvement in Combat Management Systems for NGC and P75I.

The Next-Generation Corvette (NGC) programme, estimated at over Rs 33,000 crore, is anticipated to go to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers has been identified as the lowest bidder for this significant naval project.

This order, pending Cabinet Committee on Security clearance, could substantially increase Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers’ order book. Combined with its involvement in the P17B Frigates programme, its order book could reach around Rs 75,600 crore by FY28E.

Strategic Impact on Domestic Defence

These three programmes are crucial for India’s defence industrial sector, fostering domestic submarine construction, expanding opportunities for missile manufacturers, and strengthening naval shipbuilding capabilities. The contractual negotiations have reportedly concluded, with final Cabinet Committee on Security approval pending.

The pipeline of these significant defence contracts underscores a broader impact across multiple companies, extending beyond just the primary contractors. This demonstrates a strategic governmental push to enhance indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and support ancillary industries.
