India’s data centre (DC) footprint is projected to expand fourfold, reaching 101 million square feet (msf) by 2030, according to a report by Anarock. This marks a substantial increase from the 27 msf recorded in the first half of 2026, indicating rapid sector growth.
The country’s DC capacity is also expected to nearly triple, driven by a confluence of investment commitments, robust cloud adoption, and strategic government policies.

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA), 2023, plays a crucial role by mandating that personal data be stored and processed within India. This legal requirement directly fuels the demand for secure domestic data infrastructure and colocation services, underpinning the sector’s growth.
Major Investment Drivers and Policy Support
- Google: Committed $15 billion for a DC in Visakhapatnam.
- Colt DC-RMZ: A $1.7 billion joint venture established in Mumbai and Chennai.
- Reliance: Developing a 168-megawatt (MW) AI-enabled DC in Jamnagar, leased by Meta.
Policy interventions have been instrumental in fostering this environment, notably by granting infrastructure status to data centres. This status improves access to long-term financing at competitive interest rates, making development more feasible.
Additionally, a proposed tax holiday extending through 2047 for eligible global cloud service providers is anticipated to significantly enhance India’s competitiveness. These measures collectively attract and sustain large-scale investments in the sector.

The growth is also characterized by geographic diversification, with real estate players expanding beyond traditional markets like the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Chennai. This decentralization creates new hubs for data centre development across the nation.
