India’s data center capacity set to triple to 5-6 GW by 2030, fueled by data laws, AI, and cost-effectiveness. Redseer report highlights growth drivers.
India’s data center installed capacity is projected to expand threefold, reaching 5-6 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 from its current approximate 1.65 GW. This significant increase is highlighted in a recent report by market research firm Redseer Strategy Consultants.
Catalysts for Capacity Expansion
This substantial growth is driven by a combination of regulatory frameworks and increasing technological demands. New data localization laws and mandates from financial regulators play a crucial role.
Key drivers include the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and mandates from bodies like the RBI and IRDAI.
Rising data consumption and the growing demand from AI workloads also contribute to this expansion.
Additionally, India offers a relatively low setup cost, estimated at approximately USD 8 million per megawatt.
Meeting Future Power Demands
Achieving the ambitious 2030 target requires a significant investment in power infrastructure. An additional 5 GW of grid capacity must be secured and energized within the next five years.
The projected 5-6 GW of installed IT load implies a total grid draw of approximately 7-9 GW. This highlights the critical interdependency between data center growth and energy supply.
Shifting Geographical Footprint
The current data center landscape in India is heavily concentrated, but this is expected to change. Mumbai currently accounts for about 50 percent of the installed capacity.
Combined, Mumbai and Chennai make up roughly 66 percent of the total installed capacity.
As AI demand intensifies, the Redseer report anticipates a geographical shift. While regulated and latency-sensitive inference workloads will remain in established hubs, AI training and batch workloads will seek new locations.
Emerging markets poised for significant gains in accommodating AI-driven workloads include Hyderabad, the Andhra coast, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
This projected expansion underscores India’s growing role in the global digital infrastructure, driven by both domestic policy and evolving technological needs.
