India Crypto Market: Shift to Long-Term Investing

By Business DeskIndia Crypto Market: Shift to Long-Term Investing

India’s crypto market is evolving from short-term trading to long-term investing, with HNIs showing cautious interest. Regulatory clarity is key for future growth.

The Indian cryptocurrency market is undergoing a significant transformation, moving away from short-term speculation towards a more mature, investment-oriented approach. This evolution marks a new phase for digital assets within the country.

High-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and family offices have begun integrating small portions of their portfolios into digital assets. Vikaas Sachdeva, CEO of BitDelta India, noted this shift mirrors the state of mutual funds in India around 1995.

Market Evolution and Past Trends

Historically, the market saw extensive trading driven by the volatile nature of digital assets like Bitcoin, allowing for short-term profit. The absence of a familiar investment framework, unlike gold or stocks, also fueled this trading focus.

Regulatory Landscape and Investor Confidence

For HNIs to increase their crypto exposure, regulatory clarity from the Indian government remains crucial. Such guidance would enhance understanding of digital assets, encourage new investment products, and build greater market confidence.

Current tax and regulatory structures present significant obstacles to broader HNI participation, including:

  • A 30% tax levied on crypto gains.
  • A 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) applied to every transaction.

Sachdeva emphasized the critical need for more crypto education, urging investors to prioritize concepts such as portfolio allocation and risk management. This approach contrasts with a singular focus on price movements.

While digital assets hold potential as recognized investment assets, they are not expected to replace traditional options like equity or gold. Due to their inherent volatility, cryptocurrencies are best treated as a smaller component within a diversified investment portfolio.

Future Trajectory of India’s Digital Asset Market

The future growth of India’s crypto market hinges significantly on ongoing regulatory developments and increased institutional involvement. The introduction of new crypto investment products and the growing integration between traditional finance and digital assets will also play key roles.
