India’s AI Job Growth Surges: 51,000+ Net New Roles
By Business Desk
Nomura report: India’s AI adoption creates over 51,000 net new jobs, outpacing losses. Highlights a two-tiered job market with high demand for experienced professionals.
Artificial Intelligence is creating more jobs than it displaces in India, according to a recent Nomura report. The country has seen a net positive employment impact of over 51,000 jobs linked to AI.
AI’s India Impact in Numbers
The report detailed the precise figures:
- AI-related hiring: 83,100 positions
- AI-linked layoffs and attrition: 31,921 roles
- Net positive employment: Over 51,000 jobs
India is experiencing the most significant absolute impact from AI among all Asian economies. This trend is driven by its large population and its crucial role as a global back-office hub.
Emerging Two-Tiered Job Market
The findings point to an emerging two-tiered labor market within India. Demand for entry-level employees is weakening, while experienced and senior workers remain in relatively high demand.
An ICRIER survey of India’s IT sector supports this, showing a decline in entry-level hiring. Certain roles are seeing notable displacement due to AI integration:
- Banking back-office operations
- Customer service positions
- Junior technical roles, like quality assurance testing and coding
Conversely, most new AI-related jobs are concentrated in the technology sector. Over 90% of these new roles in the Asian sample are in areas like:
- AI data annotation
- Linguistics work within India
While the early evidence from Nomura counters fears of widespread job destruction, the full impact of AI on the labor market continues to evolve. This suggests a period of significant adaptation for workers across various sectors.
