India is actively pursuing an ambitious expansion of its Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announcing negotiations with 8-9 additional countries and groups. This strategic push aims to eventually encompass approximately 75% of global trade, reinforcing India’s role as a reliable partner in international value chains.

India’s Expanding Trade Footprint

Over the past four years, India has successfully concluded nine FTAs, significantly broadening its economic reach. These recently signed agreements grant preferential market access to economies with a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of USD 60 trillion, involving 38 developed nations.

When integrated with India’s existing trade pacts, such as those with Japan, Korea, and the ASEAN region, the nation currently facilitates market access to an economy valued at USD 70 trillion. The ongoing negotiations are projected to further augment this coverage by an additional USD 15 trillion to the global GDP.

Strategic Global Value Chain Integration

The government’s objective is to solidify India’s standing as a trusted partner within global value chains. This involves not only expanding trade but also fostering deeper economic integration with key international players.

Minister Goyal recently led a delegation of over 200 business representatives to Tokyo, Japan, with the explicit goal of strengthening bilateral trade and investment relationships. During his visit, he highlighted significant investment opportunities available within India.

Key Investment Sectors in Focus

Key sectors identified for foreign investment include data centers, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence. The discussions in Tokyo also underscored the necessity of enhancing economic ties to ensure a more balanced trade relationship between India and Japan moving forward.

India’s proactive approach to FTAs marks a deliberate strategy to integrate further into the global economy, aiming for comprehensive trade coverage and robust international partnerships.
