India ranks as the world’s 3rd largest startup ecosystem. Minister Piyush Goyal reveals a 4-pillar cooperation plan with Japan to boost innovation and investment.

India has officially become the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, Union Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed, noting the establishment of 250,000 new startups over the past decade. This announcement came during the India-Japan Startup Roundtable held in Tokyo.

Goyal highlighted India’s large domestic market, extensive STEM talent pool, and robust digital public infrastructure. These factors, combined with a rapidly expanding innovation ecosystem, position India as an attractive hub for Japanese technology and investment.

The Minister then proposed a forward-looking, four-pillar framework designed to enhance India-Japan startup cooperation. This framework aims to foster deeper collaboration in key technological and financial areas.

Cooperation Framework Pillars

  • Japan-India Deep-Tech Capital Corridor to mobilize patient capital for early-stage deep-tech innovation.
  • Two-Way Innovation Bridge connecting universities, incubators, and R&D institutions across both countries.
  • Manufacturing and Technology Integration, leveraging India’s scale and entrepreneurial dynamism with Japan’s precision engineering.
  • Joint Startup Pitching Platforms facilitating regular interactions between Indian founders, Japanese corporations, and venture funds.

The Roundtable acknowledged the highly complementary strengths of both nations. India brings scale, talent, digital capabilities, and entrepreneurial speed to the partnership.

Japan, in turn, offers patient capital, advanced technology, manufacturing excellence, and global quality standards. Combining these strengths is expected to create globally competitive enterprises.

Key Figures

  • India’s global startup ecosystem rank: 3rd
  • New startups in past decade: 250,000

This strategic alignment is set to create new avenues for technological advancement and market expansion, potentially serving economies in India, Japan, and other third countries.
