India has achieved a significant milestone, reaching 300 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity as of July 31, 2026. This accomplishment represents 60% of the nation’s ambitious 2030 target of 500 GW from non-fossil sources.

The current non-fossil fuel capacity, which now accounts for over 54% of India’s total electricity generation, highlights a substantial shift in the energy landscape. The country’s overall electricity generation capacity stands at approximately 552 GW.

Understanding the Capacity Breakdown

The 300 GW capacity is diversified across several key renewable and non-fossil fuel categories. Each plays a crucial role in India’s energy mix, contributing to the nation’s energy security and environmental goals.

  • Solar power: 164.59 GW
  • Wind power: 58.14 GW
  • Hydro power: 57.24 GW
  • Bio-power: 11.75 GW
  • Nuclear power: 8.78 GW

Driving Forces Behind Renewable Expansion

Government policy support has been instrumental in accelerating this energy transition, aligning with India’s vision for an “Aatmanirbhar” or self-reliant energy ecosystem. This strategic emphasis has particularly propelled the growth of solar and wind energy sectors.

Over the past decade, solar energy capacity has surged dramatically, growing from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to approximately 165 GW today. Similarly, wind energy capacity has expanded significantly from 21 GW to over 58 GW during the same period.
