India Surpasses 300 GW Clean Energy Goal Ahead of Schedule

India achieves over 300 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by July 2026, surpassing 60% of its 2030 target, driven by massive solar power expansion.
India achieved a significant clean energy milestone, surpassing 300 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity by July 31, 2026. This accomplishment represents over 60% of its ambitious 500 GW target set for 2030.
Scaling Non-Fossil Capacity
Non-fossil sources now contribute over 54% to the nation’s total electricity generation capacity, which stands at approximately 552 GW. Solar power has been the primary driver of this impressive growth.
Solar power capacity increased from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 164.59 GW.
Wind energy grew from 21 GW to 58.14 GW.
Other non-fossil sources include 57.24 GW from hydro power, 11.75 GW from bio-power, and 8.78 GW from nuclear power.
The fiscal year 2025-26 marked a record for non-fossil capacity additions, with significant contributions from both solar and wind. Renewable energy generation surged notably during this period.
Record Additions and Output Growth
During 2025-26, the country saw a substantial increase in clean energy infrastructure. This expansion directly led to a parallel rise in output across the sector.
Record non-fossil capacity addition in 2025-26 included 44.6 GW of solar power and 6 GW of wind power.
Renewable energy generation soared from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.
Bolstering Domestic Manufacturing and Future Goals
To sustain this rapid expansion and foster supply chain independence, India has significantly enhanced its domestic manufacturing capabilities. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been instrumental in this transformation.
The capacity under the ALMM for Solar PV Modules now exceeds 200 GW, a substantial increase from 2.3 GW in 2014.
Concurrently, the government is pursuing industrial decarbonization through the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This initiative aims to position India as a global leader in green hydrogen production, use, and export, though its implementation has faced slow progress.
India’s aggressive push towards non-fossil fuel capacity firmly establishes its trajectory towards the 2030 clean energy targets, despite some initial challenges in parallel decarbonization efforts.
