Key Highlights

India’s Income Tax Department uses advanced data analytics to detect and stop fraudulent tax deduction claims, leading to increased tax recovery.

The Income Tax Department is actively using advanced technology and data analytics to flag wrongful tax relief and deduction claims. This means they are getting smarter about catching discrepancies, ensuring everyone plays by the rules.

How Data Analytics Spots Discrepancies

The Finance Ministry, through Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State for Finance, confirmed these efforts in the Lok Sabha on August 3. They’ve found several cases by combining tech with rigorous verification checks and enforcement actions.

  • Statement of Financial Transactions (SFT)
  • TDS and TCS records
  • GST data
  • High-value bank transactions
  • Property registration details

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has an in-house analytics system that pulls information from these various sources. This system helps them quickly spot potential tax evasion and errors in the details you submit.

They apply risk-based rules to scrutinize tax returns and audit reports to find discrepancies, like incorrect income reporting or excessive exemption claims. These risk parameters are constantly updated to improve accuracy.

The SAKSHAM NUDGE Campaign’s Impact

To help you correct any mistakes, CBDT launched the ‘NUDGE’ campaign under the ‘SAKSHAM’ framework. This initiative uses data insights and digital communication to encourage voluntary compliance.

  • 1.25 crore updated/revised ITRs filed
  • An additional tax payment of ₹9,493.66 crore
  • Total revenue impact of ₹12,121.91 crore

These impressive results were seen during FY 2024-25 and FY 2025-26, showing a significant positive outcome. The campaigns also included nationwide outreach to help taxpayers understand and correct their filings.

What This Means for You

The department is also working closely with other enforcement agencies and has identified intermediaries, like tax return preparers and chartered accountants, who facilitate fraudulent claims. Actions against them include e-verification, searches, and penalties.

With more use of analytics and digital tools, the tax department is moving towards a more transparent system. This helps curb the misuse of tax benefits and ensures a fairer system for everyone.
