Hindalco Launches India’s First Specialty Alumina Plant
By Business Desk
Hindalco Industries commissions India’s first super specialty alumina plant in Belagavi, Karnataka, boosting domestic production of critical fire-retardant materials.
Hindalco Industries Ltd, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, has commissioned India’s first super specialty alumina manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka. This facility will produce Superfine PPT ATH, a critical halogen-free flame-retardant material.
- Initial annual capacity: 30,000 tonnes
- Planned expansion: 60,000 tonnes
- Product: Superfine PPT ATH
- Applications: Fire-safe cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites, paints
The plant’s output, Superfine PPT ATH, is a high-value precipitated aluminium trihydrate crucial for advanced fire-safety materials. It functions by suppressing flame propagation and smoke without releasing harmful halogen acid gases. This addresses a growing demand for safer materials in various industries.
Strategic Domestic Production
This commissioning marks a significant step, as it introduces domestic production of this high-value specialty alumina product to India for the first time. The plant is specifically designed to meet almost the entire domestic demand for safer cables from the wire and cable industry. This move enhances national self-reliance in a critical material segment.
Sustainable Manufacturing Benchmark
Notably, the Belagavi facility sets a global benchmark for sustainable manufacturing practices. It stands as the world’s sole specialty alumina plant operating entirely on renewable energy. Hindalco already holds a leadership position in India’s specialty alumina sector, offering over 120 grades of non-metallurgical specialty alumina across diverse industries.
