GOBARdhan Scheme: Rs 23,731 Cr Boost for Bioenergy in India

The Union Cabinet has officially approved the National Circular Bioenergy Scheme, known as ‘GOBARdhan’, backed by a substantial outlay of Rs 23,731 crore. This initiative aims to significantly bolster India’s renewable energy sector and will be implemented over a decade, from FY2026-27 through FY2035-36.

The primary objective of GOBARdhan is to increase domestic Compressed Biogas (CBG) production by nearly ten-fold. It also seeks to attract substantial private investment and cultivate a robust circular bioeconomy across the nation.

How the GOBARdhan Framework Operates

This scheme establishes a strong and predictable framework essential for scaling India’s CBG sector nationally. It addresses critical aspects such as ensuring demand and providing stable financial incentives.

The framework provides for assured demand and remunerative, stable pricing. It includes provisions for capital assistance and pipeline infrastructure. Furthermore, the scheme offers credit support and fosters technology development.

GOBARdhan will convert various biomass resources into clean fuel and organic manure. This includes agricultural residue, cattle dung, press mud, and municipal organic waste, generating rural income and national economic value.
