FSSAI Suspends Food Brands Over Major Safety Violations
By ThePip Desk
FSSAI suspends licenses of VKC Nuts and Chheda Specialities Foods due to severe hygiene violations, including live insects and mold, impacting consumer trust in India.
Nobody wants to think about what’s really in their snacks, but India’s food safety watchdog, FSSAI, just pulled the plug on two popular brands over some truly stomach-churning findings.
This move aims to keep our plates safe, highlighting serious hygiene issues at VKC Nuts Private Limited and Chheda Specialities Foods Pvt. Ltd.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is stepping up its game, suspending licenses for these companies located in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively.
It’s all part of their mission to ensure only safe food reaches us consumers, safeguarding public health from serious violations.
What Inspectors Found at VKC Nuts
Inspectors at VKC Nuts in Uttar Pradesh uncovered a disturbing list of issues, leading to a partial license suspension.
The facility received a compliance score of only 38%, with critical findings including:
Live insects were discovered in pistachios.
Heavy black mold and fungal growth covered walls and ceilings.
Dirty, greasy floors were found covered with rat droppings.
Machinery was damaged, equipment unhygienic, and paint peeling.
A live lizard was spotted near the fumigation chamber.
Pest control was inadequate, with damaged rodent bait stations and droppings.
Expired raw materials lacked proper segregation.
Food handlers showed poor hygiene and were missing safety gear.
Chheda Specialities Foods’ Hygiene Lapses
Over in Maharashtra, Chheda Specialities Foods faced similar scrutiny, with inspectors detailing multiple hygiene and sanitation failures.
The findings highlighted significant deficiencies across their operations, impacting their ability to produce safe food:
Food handlers were observed mixing dough with bare hands.
Bananas were being peeled on contaminated floors next to decomposing waste.
Extensive fungal growth was present around oil storage tanks.
Serious waste management issues included rejected and expired products stored near raw materials.
Roof leakages and damaged flooring led to stagnant water.
Flaking walls and direct discharge of wastewater onto the processing floor were noted.
Pest control was deficient, with damaged insect-proof mesh and dead houseflies in the seasoning area.
These FSSAI actions remind us how crucial food safety regulations are, ensuring the snacks and meals we pick up from stores meet basic health standards.
