Flutterwave Secures $3.3 Billion Valuation

Africa-focused FinTech Flutterwave has achieved a $3.3 billion valuation after securing an equity investment from blockchain giant Ripple. This strategic deal aims to boost Flutterwave’s capital and expand its payment infrastructure across Africa.

The Strategic Investment

The partnership is designed to accelerate cross-border payments, addressing the rising demand for efficient and affordable international transactions on the continent. Ripple gains access to one of Africa’s largest FinTech networks, while Flutterwave benefits from enhanced infrastructure and expertise.

  • Flutterwave operates across 35 countries in Africa.
  • Ripple has been expanding its African presence, including partnerships with Absa Bank and Chipper Cash.
  • Flutterwave is actively developing its digital assets and stablecoin payment services.

Stablecoins and African Payments

The investment coincides with an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report highlighting the growing adoption of stablecoin payments. Nigeria, Flutterwave’s home country, accounts for 60% of Africa’s stablecoin inflows since 2019.

The IMF notes stablecoins offer financial inclusion and faster remittances, but also flags potential policy tradeoffs, such as impacts on monetary sovereignty due to the prevalence of U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins.
