Stay informed about crucial financial updates starting September 1 in India, including ITR deadlines, potential LPG and fuel price changes, and their budget impact.

Heads up, everyone! September 1 brings a wave of significant financial changes and important deadlines that could directly affect your budget and daily life in India. From tax filings to fuel prices, it’s essential to know what’s coming.

Deadlines for Your Income Tax Returns

For those with business or professional income not requiring a tax audit, August 31 was the final date to file your Income Tax Returns (ITR). If you missed this, you can still file a belated return by December 31, 2026, or before your assessment is completed, whichever comes first.

Remember, late filing comes with penalties:

• If your total income is up to ₹5 lakh, you’ll face a penalty of ₹1,000.

• For income exceeding ₹5 lakh, the penalty increases to ₹5,000.

LPG e-KYC and Price Watch

Domestic LPG consumers had until August 31 to complete their Aadhaar-based biometric authentication, or e-KYC. Oil marketing companies have strongly advised completing this through digital channels or by visiting your distributor, urging you to avoid last-minute rush.

You should also be aware that oil marketing companies typically review LPG prices at the beginning of each month. This means both domestic and commercial LPG cylinder prices could see adjustments from September 1, impacting your household and business expenses.

Keeping an Eye on Fuel Costs

Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices are also subject to monthly review, with potential changes coming in September. Since ATF is a major operating cost for airlines, any rise could put pressure on their finances, though this doesn’t always lead to higher ticket prices for you.

If you’re planning to travel, it’s a good idea to monitor fuel prices alongside other factors like seasonal demand and airline capacity.

Bank Service Charges and FD Transparency

Banks frequently update charges for various services, including ATM transactions, cash handling, and general account services. These changes aren’t uniform across all banks, so always check your specific bank’s latest schedule of charges, especially if you often exceed free transaction limits.

For those with larger savings, new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules for bulk Fixed Deposits (₹3 crore or more) will come into effect from October 1, 2026. These rules aim for more transparency, requiring banks to disclose interest rates daily and offer uniform rates across branches for similar deposits.

Other Important Tax Dates for September

Beyond these, September also includes several routine tax and GST compliance deadlines you should note:

• Pay August’s TDS/TCS by September 7.

• Submit your second installment of advance tax by September 15.

• File your monthly GSTR-1 by September 11.

• Complete your GSTR-3B filing by September 20.

Staying informed about these financial adjustments and deadlines helps you manage your money effectively and avoid any unexpected surprises.
