By Business DeskIndia: A Global Manufacturing Hub for Investors, Says Finance Minister

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman invites global investors to ‘Manufacture in India, Build for the World,’ highlighting India’s potential as a strategic manufacturing and innovation hub.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently called upon global investors to establish manufacturing and innovation centers in India.

Speaking at a Business Roundtable in Chicago, the Minister emphasized India’s diverse growth trajectory and extensive long-term investment opportunities, positioning the nation as a global platform for building for the world.

India’s Investment Appeal

Sitharaman highlighted India’s appeal through several key factors: its significant scale, robust growth, skilled talent pool, developing infrastructure, and advanced technology adoption. She also noted a decade of sustained reforms contributing to this favorable environment.

Investors should view India not merely as a consumer market, but as a strategic base. This includes leveraging its engineering talent, manufacturing scale, and technology ecosystem to become a global platform.

Diverse Opportunities for Growth

The discussion at the roundtable covered various sectors presenting opportunities for investment and collaboration.

These sectors include: manufacturing, artificial intelligence and digital technologies, financial services, and infrastructure development. Additionally, opportunities exist in food processing, defense, and advanced technologies.

Digital Infrastructure and High-Value Business

India’s Digital Public Infrastructure, built at a population scale, provides a foundation for new businesses. This ecosystem includes key platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, and ONDC, collectively known as India Stack.

These digital advancements are paving the way for higher-value businesses. Specific areas include artificial intelligence, engineering, analytics, product development, semiconductors, and electronics manufacturing.

GIFT City: A Global Financial Hub

The Minister also pointed to GIFT City as an emerging international financial center. It serves as a crucial link, connecting global capital with Indian opportunities.

GIFT City offers diverse prospects across several financial domains. These encompass banking, fund management, reinsurance, aircraft and ship leasing, and sustainable finance, with 1,250 registered entities as of June 2026.

Reconfiguring Global Supply Chains

Amidst global supply chain reconfigurations, India presents a compelling combination of a large domestic market and globally competitive manufacturing capabilities. The focus extends beyond simple assembly operations.

The nation is shifting towards deeper component manufacturing, sophisticated engineering, and advanced technologies. This strategic shift is actively supported by targeted policy measures, including various production-linked incentive schemes.

Infrastructure and Agricultural Potential

Significant infrastructure development is underway across the country, creating further investment avenues. Projects range from dedicated freight corridors and railway modernization to electrification and high-speed rail networks.

These initiatives offer extensive opportunities in engineering, technology, materials, and specialized equipment. The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund also serves as a platform for global investors to deploy long-term institutional capital.

India’s robust agricultural base, coupled with rising incomes and evolving consumption patterns, fuels opportunities in food processing. This includes automation, advanced packaging, efficient logistics, and comprehensive cold chain solutions, serving both Indian and global markets.

Fostering Domestic Capabilities

Through initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat and iDEX, India is actively building its domestic capabilities. This effort focuses on cutting-edge areas such as drones, autonomous systems, and other advanced technologies, reinforcing its self-reliance and innovation drive.
