India’s Fertiliser Ministry Tackles Shortages with New Tech

India’s Fertiliser Ministry launches an advanced analytical tool and dashboard for real-time tracking of dispatches and inventories to combat shortages and improve distribution.
The Indian fertiliser ministry has introduced a sophisticated analytical tool and a national-to-retail dashboard to enhance the real-time tracking of fertiliser dispatches, movement, and inventories. This strategic deployment aims to proactively prevent localized shortages and detect unusual purchasing patterns, enabling prompt corrective measures by officials.
Enhancing Supply Chain Visibility
This new system is closely integrated with the central government’s Integrated Fertiliser Management System (iFMS), which processes approximately 70 million tonnes of fertiliser transactions annually. The iFMS currently involves over 140 million Aadhaar-linked fertiliser buyers and more than 0.25 million retail outlets, ensuring transparent distribution of an estimated ₹3 trillion in annual subsidies.
Digital Farmer IDs and AgriStack Integration
Further strengthening its digital infrastructure, the fertiliser ministry’s tools are fully integrated with Haryana’s Meri Fasal Mera Byora (MFMB) portal and the agriculture ministry’s national AgriStack databases. The ambitious AgriStack program seeks to establish a comprehensive, dynamic, and real-time database of Indian farmers through the creation of Farmer IDs by state governments.
As of August 15, 2026, the digital agriculture mission has successfully linked 61% of the country’s sown area to a Farmer ID. However, 17 states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Assam, Kerala, Odisha, and West Bengal, still have less than a third of their sown area linked, indicating areas for further development.
Combating Pilferage and Ensuring Equitable Access
Officials anticipate that linking digital Farmer IDs with fertiliser sales will enable verification of purchases against land ownership and crop patterns in various states, allowing for accurate determination of actual agricultural demand. An official stated that by utilizing AgriStack IDs, farmers can order necessary quantities via mobile applications, generating QR codes validated at point-of-sale (PoS) devices, thereby ensuring equitable access and transparent sales.
This linkage is also expected to significantly reduce pilferage and leakages in fertiliser distribution, issues that have contributed to record urea consumption exceeding 40 million tonnes in FY26. India’s fertiliser subsidy has consistently surpassed Budget estimates in recent years, largely due to increased consumption often attributed to these system inefficiencies.
An official assessment from 2024-25 indicated that while 65% of farmers purchased a reasonable five to seven bags of urea annually, the remaining 35% accounted for the majority of urea usage. This data also highlights that approximately 163 of India’s 730 districts exhibit high fertiliser usage, underscoring the need for precise monitoring and distribution.
