Economy news: India stays on path of fiscal consolidation: RBI Deputy Governor

Key Highlights

RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta says India is on a path of fiscal consolidation and maintains a credible inflation record over the last decade.

The Reserve Bank of India maintains that the country continues to follow a path of fiscal consolidation. Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta stated that India remains the fastest-growing large economy while keeping its inflation record credible over the last decade.

Projections indicate that general-government debt will decrease by roughly 9 percentage points of GDP by the 2031-32 period. The central bank noted that the country faces neither rollover nor runaway risks regarding its debt levels. Growth is currently supported by private consumption, public investment, and emerging drivers like merchandise exports and private investment.

Regarding inflation, the RBI stated that the adoption of flexible inflation targeting has led to a structural decline in price volatility. The Monetary Policy Committee remains committed to this framework. Additionally, the financial sector shows stability with a capital adequacy ratio of 17.7 per cent and a gross NPA ratio of 1.8 per cent. The RBI continues to monitor potential risks from global financial markets, climate change, and cyber threats.
