By ThePip Desk
PM Modi aims to empower 6 crore rural women as ‘Lakhpati Didis’ with sustainable incomes of ₹1 lakh annually by India’s 80th Independence Day in 2027.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ambitious target to empower 6 crore ‘Lakhpati Didis’ by India’s 80th Independence Day, significantly expanding on previous goals. This initiative aims to transform the rural women’s economy through sustainable income generation.
Government data from the Ministry of Rural Development indicates that over 3.46 crore members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have already achieved ‘Lakhpati Didi’ status by July 2026, surpassing the initial target of 3 crore. This progress is a core component of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).
Defining ‘Lakhpati Didi’ Status
A ‘Lakhpati Didi’ is specifically defined as an SHG woman whose household consistently achieves a sustainable annual income of at least ₹1 lakh. This income must be maintained over four agricultural seasons or business cycles.
- Annual household income: at least ₹1 lakh
- Average monthly income: ₹10,000
The DAY-NRLM Framework
The DAY-NRLM program provides comprehensive support to help women reach this economic threshold. Its framework includes several key areas designed to foster economic independence and growth.
- Financial inclusion and skill development
- Livelihood planning and access to credit
- Enterprise development and market linkages
Geographic Impact and Diverse Livelihoods
As of March 31, 2026, certain states demonstrate significant success in cultivating ‘Lakhpati Didis.’ These women engage in a broad spectrum of economic activities, from traditional farming to modern services.
- Maharashtra: 49.66 lakh Lakhpati Didis
- Bihar: 43.40 lakh Lakhpati Didis
- West Bengal: 34.20 lakh Lakhpati Didis
These entrepreneurs pursue diverse ventures, including goat rearing, poultry, dairy farming, and food processing. Many also engage in handicrafts, retail, beauty services, and banking-related work, often diversifying their activities after initial successes.
Expanding Non-Farm Ventures and Market Reach
The government actively promotes a transition towards non-farm businesses to further empower rural women. Initiatives are also underway to enhance market access for their products and services.
- Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP) supported over 4.32 lakh enterprises by June 2026.
Market access is being bolstered through dedicated brands such as Saras and Aajeevika, along with Saras Melas. Furthermore, the eSaras platform and partnerships with online marketplaces are creating broader sales channels.
Ensuring Program Sustainability
The long-term success of the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ initiative hinges on crucial factors like continuous demand and market access. Productivity and ongoing diversification are also vital for sustained growth.
- Government evaluations from 2025 showed household income gains ranging from 9.5% to 33% in mature community-institution clusters.
Prime Minister Modi’s expanded target underscores an intent to build a robust ecosystem of women-led enterprises. This acknowledges the varied pathways women pursue to achieve economic independence across India.
