NPS Exit Rules Updated: Withdrawal Guidelines Explained

Key Highlights

Understand the updated NPS exit and withdrawal rules effective until 2026. Learn about annuity requirements for government employees and lump sum options.

The National Pension System (NPS) has introduced updated withdrawal rules designed to provide subscribers with greater flexibility. These changes will remain in effect until 2026.

Under the revised guidelines, government employees who opt for premature exit from the NPS are now required to allocate 80% of their accumulated pension wealth (APW) towards the purchase of an annuity. This ensures a steady income stream post-retirement.

However, a different provision applies to subscribers with a smaller APW. Individuals whose accumulated pension wealth is ₹5 lakh or less are permitted to withdraw the entire amount as a lump sum. This offers immediate access to their funds without the requirement of purchasing an annuity.

These updated rules aim to provide NPS subscribers with more options when exiting the pension system, balancing the need for retirement income with individual financial circumstances.
