By ThePip Desk
Avoid last-minute stress! File ITR-3, 4, 5, & 7 by August 31 for AY 2026-27. Over 6.5 crore returns filed; don’t get caught in the rush.
The Income Tax Department is reminding you to file your Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year 2026-27, specifically forms ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, and ITR-7, before the upcoming August 31 deadline.
They want you to avoid the rush, as over 6.5 crore income tax returns are already filed for AY 2026-27 as of August 20. More than 2 crore of these are ITR-3 and ITR-4 returns.
Why File Your ITR Early?
Filing early gives you plenty of time to fix any errors, sort out documentation problems, or handle technical glitches before the deadline hits. Waiting until the last minute can lead to unnecessary stress and complications.
Which ITR Form Do You Need?
If you are an individual or a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) earning from a business or profession, covering salary, house property, capital gains, and other sources, then ITR-3 is for you.
For eligible resident individuals, HUFs, and firms (excluding LLPs) with a total income up to Rs 50 lakh, who report business or professional income under presumptive taxation, ITR-4 (also called Sugam) is the form to use.
Entities like firms, Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs), associations of persons (AOPs), and bodies of individuals (BOIs) should use ITR-5.
If you are a taxpayer mandated to file returns under specific provisions of the Income-tax Act, such as certain trusts and political parties, you will need to file ITR-7.
Don’t Forget These Steps
The Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal confirms August 31, 2026, as the due date for non-audit cases. Taxpayers whose accounts require auditing have different deadlines.
Make sure you carefully pick the correct ITR form. After filing, ensure you complete the timely verification process to avoid any issues.
Acting now means you can file your returns smoothly and confidently, avoiding any last-minute scramble.
