This visit underscores the expanding engagement between India and Iran, particularly as Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024. India’s role as the host nation for the upcoming summit highlights its increasing influence within the bloc.

Diplomatic Engagements Amidst West Asian Tensions
President Pezeshkian’s visit occurs against the backdrop of escalating tensions across West Asia. This context elevates the importance of bilateral and regional discussions during the summit.
Previously, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited India in June for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. During this meeting, Araghchi advocated for India to assume a more significant role in de-escalating the regional conflict, emphasizing that a negotiated settlement remains the only viable path forward.
Araghchi also engaged in discussions with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, where he reaffirmed Iran’s commitment as a reliable partner for commercial security. He also articulated Iran’s stance on the critical Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global trade.
President Pezeshkian’s last known interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi took place in October 2024 during the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia. Their discussions then covered a range of bilateral and regional issues, setting a precedent for the upcoming talks in New Delhi.
