Data from the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) reveals a significant surge in outward remittances for these investments.
Key Investment Figures Emerge
Outward remittances for equity and debt investments reached $363.6 million in May 2026 alone. This figure represents a more than doubling year-on-year.
The total for April-May 2026 stood at $603.3 million, indicating a nearly 96% year-on-year increase, underscoring a growing appetite for international assets.
Expanding Global Footprint
Overseas equities offer geographical diversification, providing access to sectors not well-represented within India’s domestic market. However, investors must navigate considerations such as currency fluctuations, market volatility, and complex tax and regulatory requirements.
Sustained Crypto Engagement
Parallel to this, Indian participants maintain substantial activity in the crypto market. This engagement persists despite a global decline in retail crypto volumes and India’s specific regulatory and tax environment.
India’s retail crypto transaction volume was approximately $46 billion in Q1 2026, highlighting continued interest in digital assets.
Vikaas M Sachdeva, CEO of BitDelta India, stated that this trend is not about investors choosing one asset class over another. Instead, he noted it reflects a growing willingness to explore multiple investment and digital-asset channels for diversification purposes.
Sachdeva advises investors to base their decisions on individual circumstances, investment objectives, and risk appetite. He emphasized ensuring participation occurs through transparent, accountable, and compliant systems, whether utilizing LRS channels for overseas investments or FIU-registered entities for virtual digital assets in India.
