India Mandates Crypto Reporting for Financial Institutions

India expands tax regulations to include crypto holdings, requiring financial institutions to report digital assets and enhance transparency to curb tax evasion.
India has significantly expanded its tax reporting regulations to include cryptocurrency holdings, now requiring financial institutions to report these digital assets. This move aims to enhance transparency across the digital asset landscape and directly curb tax evasion.
The updated compliance framework mandates stricter customer verification and due diligence procedures for accounts with balances exceeding $1 million. This directive specifically targets high-net-worth individuals and entities involved in the crypto market.
This regulatory expansion aligns with global anti-money laundering standards established by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The goal is to combat illicit financial activities such as money laundering and terrorist financing.
For individual investors, the new rules mean increased scrutiny of their digital asset portfolios. They will face a greater emphasis on accurate reporting of capital gains and losses derived from cryptocurrency transactions.
Financial institutions, including banks, mutual funds, insurers, and custodians, must now upgrade their existing compliance systems. This necessary upgrade could potentially lead to increased operational costs across the sector.
Regulatory Precedent
This latest regulatory measure follows previous governmental actions aimed at integrating crypto transactions into the formal financial system. In 2022, India introduced a 30% tax on crypto income.
Additionally, a 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) was implemented on crypto transactions during the same period. These steps highlight the government’s consistent intent to formalize the digital asset economy.
While these new requirements introduce additional compliance burdens, they also signal a form of acceptance from regulators. This could foster greater trust and stability within the broader crypto market, potentially encouraging mainstream adoption.
