India Addresses FPI Outflows Amid Global Trends

By Market DeskIndia Addresses FPI Outflows Amid Global Trends

India’s government attributes recent FPI equity outflows to global trends, citing geopolitical and economic factors. Investor confidence remains strong.

The Indian government has stated that recent Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) withdrawals from Indian equity markets are part of a wider trend observed across emerging markets. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Lok Sabha that these movements stem from both global and domestic factors.

Understanding FPI Movements

These influencing factors include geopolitical uncertainties, trade-related concerns, currency fluctuations, and shifts in global investment strategies. The government maintains that investor confidence in Indian markets remains strong, supported by robust domestic institutional investors.

Data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) highlights specific FPI activity:

  • FPIs were net sellers of Indian equities, totaling Rs 1,52,691.04 crore during 2025-26.
  • This marked a reversal from net inflows in the two preceding years.
  • Gross FPI purchases significantly increased from Rs 23,87,375.71 crore in 2021-22 to Rs 44,64,817.84 crore in 2025-26, indicating long-term confidence.

Rupee Stability and Economic Fundamentals

The government also addressed the impact of foreign fund withdrawals on the Indian rupee. Exchange rate movements are shaped by a variety of elements, not solely FPI flows.

  • Key factors include the US Dollar Index.
  • Foreign capital flows, interest rates, and crude oil prices also play a role.
  • India’s current account position is another significant determinant.

India’s economic fundamentals are described as strong, with real GDP growing over 7% in the last three years. This growth is underpinned by robust domestic demand, healthy corporate balance sheets, and sound fiscal management.

High-frequency economic indicators for Q1 FY 2026-27 suggest continued economic momentum. This sustained activity is driven by domestic consumption, infrastructure development, and ongoing reforms across various sectors.

Facilitating Foreign Portfolio Investors

To further support and attract foreign portfolio investors, several authorities have implemented targeted measures. These initiatives aim to streamline processes and enhance investment appeal.

  • The Ministry of Finance, RBI, and SEBI have worked on regulatory simplification.
  • Improved operational procedures and higher investment limits have been introduced.
  • Investor outreach programs are also part of these efforts.

The government concluded that while global factors might induce market fluctuations, India’s strong economic fundamentals, expanding domestic investor base, and proactive policy measures collectively ensure capital market stability.
