India, China Reaffirm Border Dispute Settlement Talks

India and China have reaffirmed their dedication to achieving a “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement” for their long-standing border dispute. This renewed commitment emerged from the 25th Meeting of the Special Representatives on the Boundary Question, which recently concluded in Beijing.

The high-level discussions featured Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Their talks centered on advancing the complex process of boundary delimitation and ensuring peace along the disputed frontier.

Key Areas of Dialogue

During their extensive dialogue, the special representatives meticulously addressed several critical aspects of the bilateral relationship. A primary focus was placed on advancing boundary delimitation efforts between the two nations to resolve the territorial dispute.

Another significant point of discussion involved strategies for maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Both officials also explored avenues for enhancing broader bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

The meeting also served to highlight the profound global and strategic significance of China-India ties. Participants emphasised the crucial need to improve communication mechanisms and actively work towards reducing existing differences to foster better understanding.

Recent Diplomatic Progress

Diplomatic relations between these two nuclear powers have shown a consistent improvement since a violent confrontation in 2020. This progress culminated in a notable disengagement agreement, which was successfully implemented in October 2024.

Further high-level engagement is anticipated as Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit India in the near future. This visit is planned for the BRICS summit, which is scheduled to take place in September 2026.
