The Delhi government is moving forward with plans to construct an approximately 61-kilometre elevated corridor along the Najafgarh drain, aiming to alleviate significant traffic congestion. This ambitious project, first announced in February, will connect Wazirabad to North Delhi.
Project Overview and Objectives
The Public Works Department (PWD) is currently in the process of appointing a private consultant. This consultant will conduct a comprehensive feasibility study and then prepare a detailed project plan for the corridor. The main goals for this initiative are clear and multifaceted.
- Decrease congestion on major roads across the city.
- Shorten overall travel times for commuters.
- Lower fuel consumption for vehicles.
- Reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to better air quality.
Corridor Alignment and Inter-connectivity
The proposed corridor involves two primary sections to enhance urban mobility. Roads will be developed along both sides of the Najafgarh drain, spanning from Chhawla to Basaidarapur. An additional two-lane road is planned for the left bank.
- Main stretch: 54.83 kilometres along both sides of the Najafgarh drain (Chhawla to Basaidarapur).
- Left bank road: 5.94-kilometre two-lane section from Jhatikra Bridge to Chhawla Bridge.
This new infrastructure is designed to improve inter-connectivity with several key arterial roads. It will link to the Outer Ring Road, Inner Ring Road, Shivaji Marg, and Pankha Road. Furthermore, it connects with UER-II, which itself links to NH-9 Rohtak Road, and Najafgarh Road.
Design Elements and Environmental Enhancements
The project details outline specific construction elements and additional features to support its functionality and environmental goals. A 7-meter-wide paved road will be constructed along the drain. This main road will be complemented by dedicated pathways.
- Separate tracks for walking, jogging, and cycling.
- A new bridge near the Dwarka Metro Depot to improve traffic flow.
- Landscaping and tree plantation along the corridor for environmental benefits.
- Construction of new boundary walls and repair of existing damaged ones.
Officials have also confirmed that the study will incorporate Delhi Metro rail corridors located at certain junctions along the proposed alignment. The total estimated cost for this extensive project stands at Rs 454 crore.
