By ThePip DeskAugust 31 ITR Deadline: Business Tax Filing Guide

August 31, 2026, is the ITR deadline for Indian business taxpayers. Learn about key forms like 26AS & AIS and filing requirements.

If you’re a professional or business taxpayer, mark your calendar: the Income Tax Return (ITR) deadline for Assessment Year 2026-27 is August 31, 2026.

The Income Tax Department is urging everyone with business or professional income to file their returns on time. Verifying your financial details, like income, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), and tax payments, is crucial to avoid any errors.

Important Deadlines to Remember

Two main deadlines are important to remember for your ITR filing this year.

The general deadline for non-audit taxpayers with business or professional income is August 31, 2026, for Assessment Year 2026-27.

If your accounts require a tax audit under section 44AB, your deadline extends to October 31, 2026.

Essential Documents for Your ITR

Before you even pick an ITR form, make sure you check Form 26AS and your Annual Information Statement (AIS).

Form 26AS shows details of your Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS).

Your AIS gives you a full picture of financial info reported to the tax department, including Specified Financial Transaction (SFT) data, tax payments, refunds, demands, and GST-related information. Always reconcile these with your own records to catch any differences.

Understanding Specific Forms

For those earning non-salary income where tax has already been deducted, Form 16A is vital.

This quarterly TDS certificate helps you verify the income, the TDS amount, the nature of payment, and the tax deposited, ensuring accurate TDS claims.

You might use Forms 15G and 15H if you’re eligible to request non-deduction of TDS on certain interest income because your tax liability is expected to be zero.

Form 15G is for resident individuals under 60, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and other entities. Form 15H is specifically for resident individuals aged 60 or above.

If your accounts need a tax audit under section 44AB of the Income Tax Act, 1961, then Forms 3CB-CD are mandatory.

Form 3CB is the audit report itself, while Form 3CD contains all the required particulars for the audit.

Finally, if you’re subject to transfer pricing provisions, you will need Form 3CEB, which must be obtained from a chartered accountant.

This form includes crucial details of specified international and domestic transactions under section 92E of the Income Tax Act, 1961.

Filing your ITR involves more than just selecting the right form; prepare and verify all your necessary documents well in advance to avoid last-minute complications.
