Dr. Reddy’s terminates Novartis India distribution pact after ChrysCapital’s majority stake acquisition. Novartis to regain product exclusivity post-September 2026.

Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories has terminated its multi-year agreement with Novartis India, a significant development stemming from a change in Novartis India’s controlling ownership. This decision follows private equity firm ChrysCapital’s acquisition of a substantial 70.68% stake in the Swiss drugmaker’s Indian arm.

The original distribution and promotion pact, which had spanned over four years, was officially executed for termination on August 7. Under this arrangement, Dr. Reddy’s commercialized specific Novartis brands across India.

The Partnership’s Dissolution

The agreement, initially signed on February 11, 2022, will see Dr. Reddy’s continue its commercialization efforts for the designated brands until September 30, 2026. After this period, Novartis India will fully re-acquire exclusive rights and market access for these products.

Novartis India maintains a diverse portfolio, focusing on key therapeutic areas. These include pain management, calcium supplementation, gynaecology, neurosciences, and transplant immunology.

The company’s prominent brands affected by this shift include Voveran, Calcium Sandoz, and Tegrital. This strategic realignment allows Novartis India to directly manage its market presence for these established products.

ChrysCapital’s Strategic Entry

For ChrysCapital, this acquisition represents its inaugural majority-controlled investment within India’s dynamic pharmaceutical sector. The firm’s move underscores a clear vote of confidence in the sustained, long-term growth trajectory of India’s branded pharmaceuticals market.

This termination ultimately highlights the evolving corporate strategies within India’s pharmaceutical landscape, driven by significant private equity interest and a clear focus on market consolidation and direct control over brand commercialization.
