Key Highlights

A Delhi-NCR company’s new GPS-tracked WFH policy, implemented after layoffs, has left employees confused and questioning the definition of remote work flexibility.

Controversial Work-From-Home Policy Implemented in Delhi-NCR

A Delhi-NCR based company has sparked confusion and disappointment among its employees after implementing a new work-from-home (WFH) policy that includes mandatory GPS location tracking. This controversial move comes on the heels of significant layoffs, which saw the company’s workforce drastically reduced from 40 to just 15 employees.

The policy mandates that employees, despite working remotely, must remain strictly within the Delhi-NCR geographical region. Their attendance is to be verified through GPS tracking, a stipulation that has drawn criticism and debate regarding employee autonomy and the true nature of remote work.

Layoffs Precede Restrictive Remote Work Shift

The introduction of this WFH policy is directly linked to a substantial restructuring within the company. Following the reduction of its employee count by more than 60%, the firm also downsized its physical office space. This reduction necessitated a shift to a rotational WFH schedule for the remaining staff.

Initially, an employee expressed optimism about the new arrangement, envisioning the opportunity to relocate and work from their hometown. This hope, however, was quickly dashed by management’s clarification regarding the strict geographical constraints and the active monitoring of their location.

GPS Tracking and Geographical Restrictions Frustrate Staff

The core of the employee’s disappointment stems from the company’s insistence on employees remaining within the Delhi-NCR area, with their precise location verified through GPS. This requirement fundamentally contradicts the common perception of work-from-home as a means to offer greater flexibility and geographical freedom to employees.

For many, the appeal of remote work lies in the ability to escape urban centers, reduce living costs, or be closer to family. The company’s policy, while offering remote work, effectively negates these potential benefits by tethering employees to a specific metropolitan region, under constant digital surveillance.

Mixed Reactions Emerge on Social Media

The policy has ignited a mixed bag of reactions across social media platforms. Some users have expressed strong sympathy for the affected employees, labeling the restrictive WFH terms as a form of ‘slavery’ due to the intrusive nature of GPS tracking and the lack of true flexibility.

Conversely, other online commentators have pointed out that such restrictive WFH policies are not uncommon. They suggest that companies often implement these measures to ensure employees can rapidly return to the office if business needs arise, or to mitigate issues such as faked absences and ensure accountability. This highlights a growing tension between employers’ demands for control and employees’ desire for genuine remote work benefits.
