D2C Insider Unveils ₹150 Crore VC Fund for Early-Stage Brands

D2C Insider, a prominent community for direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand founders and enablers, has announced its intention to launch a significant venture capital fund, named ConsumerX Ventures. This new fund will have a corpus of Rs 150 crore and is strategically designed to bolster the growth of early-stage D2C brands and associated enablers.

The ConsumerX Ventures fund will operate under a Category II alternative investment fund (AIF) structure. It is poised to invest in approximately 25 D2C brands, focusing primarily on the pre-seed and seed stages of their funding journey. This initiative underscores a growing commitment to nurturing nascent businesses within the rapidly evolving D2C landscape.

Investment Focus and Strategy of ConsumerX Ventures

The primary objective of ConsumerX Ventures is to provide crucial capital to promising D2C companies at their most formative stages. Sources familiar with the development indicate that the average investment cheque size per transaction is expected to range between Rs 3 crore and Rs 5 crore. This targeted approach allows for substantial support to a curated selection of brands.

Furthermore, the fund aims to secure an ownership stake of 10-15% in the portfolio companies. A significant portion, precisely 40% of the fund, is earmarked for follow-on investments. This allocation is critical for providing continued support to selected startups as they scale, demonstrating a long-term commitment to their success beyond the initial investment.

Leadership and Operational Structure of the New Fund

Abhishek Shah, the Chief Evangelist of D2C Insider, is set to take on the role of the fund’s managing partner. His leadership is expected to guide the strategic direction and investment decisions of ConsumerX Ventures. Complementing his role, Chhavi Bhardwaj Kargaonkar, who currently manages the D2C Insider Super Angels fund, will serve as a partner at ConsumerX Ventures. Her experience with existing angel investments will be invaluable to the new fund’s operations.

The launch of ConsumerX Ventures follows the successful deployment of D2C Insider’s existing Category I AIF fund, Super Angels. This smaller fund, with a corpus of Rs 25 crore, has been backed by over 70 operator limited partners, indicating a strong foundation of experienced industry professionals within the D2C Insider network.

Market Opportunities and Target Demographics

ConsumerX Ventures intends to leverage the significant shifts observed in the consumer ecosystem, particularly the increasing influence of Gen Z and millennial consumers. These demographics are driving new consumption patterns and preferences, creating fertile ground for innovative D2C brands.

The fund will also strategically tap into the burgeoning quick commerce and e-commerce channels. A key focus will be on catering to consumers in Tier II and Tier III markets across India, recognizing the substantial untapped potential and growing purchasing power in these regions. This expansionist view aims to capture a broader market share and foster inclusive growth.

Fundraising and Investor Engagement

The launch of ConsumerX Ventures will be accompanied by roadshows aimed at attracting investors. These events will provide potential limited partners (LPs) with detailed insights into the fund’s strategy, investment thesis, and projected returns. The goal is to secure robust investor participation to ensure the fund reaches its full capacity and operational potential.

In a significant development, the VC fund is reportedly in advanced discussions with a large, established consumer group. This group is expected to come on board as an anchor investor, providing substantial backing and adding significant credibility to ConsumerX Ventures. The involvement of such a prominent entity would signal strong market confidence in the fund’s prospects.

Future Outlook and Growth Projections

ConsumerX Ventures has ambitious growth targets, aiming to achieve Rs 100 crore in revenue for its portfolio companies, coupled with a clear path to profitability. The fund also plans to raise a Series A round from leading venture capital firms within 18 months of its launch, indicating a strategy for rapid scaling and follow-on funding rounds for its investee companies.

D2C Insider, the parent community, has grown exponentially since its inception as a social networking app group in 2019. It now boasts a network of over 25,000 members across India, including more than 20,000 brands, over 7,500 enabler-founders, and more than 2,500 investors. This extensive network provides a rich pipeline of potential investments and valuable resources for the fund and its portfolio companies.
