D2C Sector Sees Robust Growth Fueled by Tier II and III Cities

India’s Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) market is experiencing a significant expansion, with recent data revealing a substantial increase in both order volumes and Gross Merchandise Value (GMV). An analysis of over 400 million order items processed through Unicommerce’s Uniware platform between April 2024 and February 2026 indicates that order volumes have grown by 33% year-on-year, while GMV has seen a corresponding rise of 32%. This robust performance underscores the increasing maturity and reach of the D2C ecosystem across the country.

A key driver of this growth is the burgeoning demand from smaller urban centers. The data highlights that Tier II and Tier III cities accounted for approximately 66% of new D2C orders in the last financial year (FY2026). This marks a notable shift from traditional e-commerce trends that were primarily led by metropolitan areas. The increasing penetration of digital infrastructure and a growing consumer base with evolving purchasing habits in these regions are contributing to this geographical diversification of online retail demand.

Operational Efficiencies and Market Projections for D2C Brands

Beyond the expansion into new geographies, D2C brands are also focusing on enhancing operational efficiencies, which is reflected in improved key performance indicators. The analysis by Unicommerce shows a significant reduction in return-to-origin (RTO) rates. These rates dropped from nearly 39% during the peak festive season of November 2025 to approximately 21% by February 2026. This decline suggests enhanced order verification processes, improved logistics, and better inventory management by D2C players, leading to greater customer satisfaction and reduced operational costs.

The Indian D2C market, currently estimated to be between $10 billion and $12 billion, is poised for substantial future growth. Projections indicate that the market could expand to $60 billion by 2030. This optimistic outlook is supported by the ongoing focus of brands on customer retention strategies, consistent service quality, and the optimization of their supply chains in an increasingly competitive marketplace. The ability to effectively serve diverse consumer bases across different city tiers will be crucial for sustained success.

Tagbin Ventures into Gov-Tech with AI and Immersive Technologies

In parallel to the e-commerce boom, Tagbin, a technology firm founded by IIT Roorkee graduates in 2013, is making a strategic pivot towards the government technology (gov-tech) sector. The company is leveraging advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and holograms to provide innovative solutions for government entities. Tagbin aims to assist governments in making more informed decisions and creating enhanced experiences for public spaces like museums and exhibitions.

Tagbin’s flagship AI offering, the Strategy Lab, was initially developed for NITI Aayog in 2021. This platform is designed to integrate and analyze data from various government sources, identifying patterns and insights that might be missed through traditional analysis methods. The Strategy Lab has been instrumental in detecting duplicate expenditures across different government departments, forecasting potential issues, and generating valuable policy recommendations. Currently, this system is deployed and operational in the states of Bihar, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra.

Expanding Gov-Tech Solutions and Private Sector Offerings

The company’s commitment to the gov-tech space extends beyond analytical platforms. Tagbin’s use of immersive technologies like AR and VR aims to create more engaging and interactive experiences for citizens interacting with government services or cultural institutions. By offering these advanced technological solutions, Tagbin positions itself as a key player in modernizing government operations and citizen engagement in India.

For the private sector, Tagbin has developed BoardRoom AI, a comprehensive solution that integrates various business tools and platforms, including Slack, Asana, and Tally, along with industry-specific reports. This offering aims to provide businesses with advanced data analytics and insights to support strategic decision-making and operational improvements, mirroring the capabilities offered to government clients but tailored for corporate environments.

Broader Economic and Geopolitical Context

The developments in India’s D2C and gov-tech sectors occur against a backdrop of significant global economic and geopolitical events. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has highlighted critical chokepoints in international trade, prompting discussions among G7 finance ministers regarding potential economic crises. Simultaneously, the need for resilient internet infrastructure has spurred consideration of alternative routes, including those traversing the Arctic, as highlighted by discussions around undersea fiber optic networks.

In the health sector, the World Health Organization has declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern, following numerous suspected deaths. In the Middle East, authorities in Abu Dhabi responded to a fire caused by a drone strike near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, underscoring security concerns in the region. These global events underscore the interconnectedness of economic stability, security, and technological infrastructure in the current international landscape.
