Crypto-Linked Human Trafficking Surges 85%
Cryptocurrency flows to suspected human trafficking services soared by 85% year-over-year in 2025, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. This concerning trend was highlighted in the latest 2026 Crypto Crime Report by Chainalysis.
The significant increase is primarily driven by the expansion of illicit ecosystems across Southeast Asia. These networks involve scam compounds, online gambling sites, and Chinese-language money-laundering operations, often coordinated via Telegram.
Illicit Ecosystems & Methods
Chainalysis identified four main categories of crypto-facilitated trafficking. These operations leverage digital currencies for various exploitative activities.
- Telegram-based ‘international escort’ services involved in human trafficking.
- ‘Labour placement’ agents who kidnap and force victims into scam compounds.
- Suspected exploitative prostitution networks.
- Vendors of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
Victims lured by ‘labour placement’ agents are often coerced into running romance and investment scams under threat of violence. Recruitment payments for these operations typically range between $1,000 and $10,000.
Payment Trends & Global Reach
Stablecoins are predominantly used by ‘international escort’ services and prostitution networks. Nearly half of these transfers exceeded US$10,000, indicating the involvement of large-scale organized crime.
These services are connected to Chinese-language money laundering networks, which quickly convert USD stablecoins into local currencies. CSAM vendors, however, are increasingly turning to Monero and instant exchangers for enhanced anonymity and faster crypto swaps without KYC checks.
By 2025, Southeast Asian ‘international escort’ services, particularly Chinese-language operations, achieved global reach through cryptocurrency. Transactions have been observed originating from countries including Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Australia.
Blockchain’s Role in Detection
The inherent transparency of blockchain technology offers valuable tools for detecting and preventing these illicit activities. Compliance teams and law enforcement can monitor specific warning signs.
- High-volume transactions through guarantee platforms.
- Wallet clusters linked to various illicit services.
- Recurring patterns of stablecoin conversions.
- Connections to Telegram channels used for recruitment.
