Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman orders Income Tax Department to streamline services, remove bureaucratic hurdles, and improve project execution for citizens.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has directed the Income Tax Department to dismantle bureaucratic obstacles hindering citizen services. She also emphasized the critical need for timely project execution to reduce costs and enhance efficiency across government operations.

Boosting Citizen Services and Efficiency

During the inauguration of the Aaykar Sindhu building in Mumbai, Sitharaman highlighted that project delays directly reflect the challenges citizens encounter when interacting with government offices.

  • Officials must focus on facilitating legitimate work with greater efficiency.
  • The department should eliminate practices that necessitate repeated visits from citizens for their tasks.

Addressing Project Delays and Asset Management

Sitharaman expressed significant dissatisfaction with the department’s asset management, specifically citing encroachment on the Aaykar Sindhu land. She attributed this issue to a “laidback” attitude and stressed the necessity for proactive protection of government assets.

Her criticism underscored the department’s broader inefficiency, which leads to prolonged project timelines and increased expenses.

Modernizing Operations and Employee Housing

The Finance Minister also addressed the pressing issue of inadequate housing for income tax officials in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

She announced plans to review land transfers to accelerate construction efforts, aiming to alleviate housing shortages for government personnel. Furthermore, Sitharaman urged the modernization of both tendering and contract management processes to improve departmental operations.

The directives issued by Minister Sitharaman will now shift focus towards whether these instructions translate into faster project approvals and more transparent asset management. These outcomes are viewed as crucial signals for both investors and contractors, indicating a commitment to improved governance.
