Primer Raises $100 Million in Series C to Advance AI-Driven Payments Infrastructure

Payments infrastructure startup Primer has successfully closed a $100 million Series C funding round, signaling a significant commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to transform enterprise payment and financial operations. The funding round was led by Sofina, with substantial participation from Peak XV Partners and existing investors including Accel, Tencent, ICONIQ Capital, Balderton Capital, and Speedinvest. This infusion of capital is earmarked for accelerating the development of Primer’s AI-powered payment products and fueling aggressive expansion, particularly within the crucial US market.

Strategic AI Focus to Reshape Enterprise Payments

Founded in 2020 by a team of former PayPal and Braintree executives, Primer is strategically positioned as a unified infrastructure layer for enterprise payments. The company aims to address the fragmentation faced by merchants in managing diverse payment processors, fraud detection tools, and acquiring systems by consolidating them into a single, cohesive platform. This latest funding round underscores the growing industry trend of enterprises seeking to integrate AI into their finance and payment workflows. Primer emphasizes that the effectiveness of AI in these domains is heavily dependent on the quality and consolidation of transaction data, a challenge addressed by its platform.

Data and AI Agent Capabilities

Primer’s core value proposition lies in its ability to capture an extensive amount of data per transaction – over 400 data points on average – and manage a significant portion of customer payment volume, exceeding 95% for many clients. This comprehensive data capture provides merchants with a consolidated view across checkout processes, fraud prevention, and payout operations. The company processes billions of transactions annually for a roster of notable clients, including GetYourGuide, Dialpad, and Printful. A key component of Primer’s AI strategy is the enhancement of its proprietary AI agent, Primer Companion. Launched last year, this tool currently assists merchants in analyzing payment data and identifying operational inefficiencies. The company intends for this agent to evolve towards autonomous execution of payment optimization tasks, further driving efficiency and cost savings for its clients.

Aggressive US Market Expansion and Growth Projections

With the US market already accounting for approximately one-fifth of its revenue and experiencing year-on-year doubling of annual recurring revenue, Primer is doubling down on its expansion efforts in the region. The company anticipates that the US will contribute over a third of its total revenue by 2028. To support this ambitious growth plan, Primer intends to hire up to 50 new employees in the United States. This strategic focus on the US market is expected to be a significant driver of future revenue and market share gains.

Industry Turning Point Driven by AI and Unified Infrastructure

Industry observers note that the payments sector is at a critical juncture, driven by the dual forces of merchant consolidation onto unified infrastructure and the increasing centrality of AI in transaction decision-making. Jean-François Burguet, head of digital at Sofina, highlighted this structural shift, emphasizing how AI is becoming indispensable for optimizing complex payment ecosystems. Aakash Kapoor, principal at Peak XV, echoed this sentiment, pointing to Primer’s capacity to manage nearly all of its clients’ payment volumes as a key differentiator, providing the necessary depth of context for AI agents to operate effectively and make informed decisions within intricate payment environments.
