GalaxEye’s Mission Drishti, the first OptoSAR satellite, successfully launched by SpaceX. India’s space tech takes a leap forward with integrated EO and SAR sensors.

Bengaluru-based space startup GalaxEye successfully launched its Mission Drishti satellite on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from California. This marks a significant achievement for the company and India’s growing space sector.

Mission Drishti is distinguished as the world’s first OptoSAR satellite, uniquely integrating electro-optical (EO) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors into a single, operational platform. While EO sensors excel at capturing high-resolution images in clear, sunlit conditions, SAR sensors provide continuous imaging capabilities regardless of weather or time of day by utilizing radar pulses.

Suyash Singh, founder and CEO of GalaxEye, stated, “With the satellite (Mission Drishti) now successfully in orbit, our immediate focus is on completing its commissioning. As we move through this phase, we are already witnessing strong global interest in the differentiated datasets enabled by our OptoSAR payload.” The satellite is expected to overcome the limitations of conventional systems, ensuring more reliable and consistent data acquisition across various environmental conditions.

As a dual-use Earth observation satellite, Mission Drishti is poised to support a wide array of applications, including defense, agriculture, disaster management, maritime monitoring, and infrastructure planning. This mission also complements India’s existing space initiatives, including the 29 active Earth Observation satellites detailed in ISRO’s recent annual report.

The launch follows five years of dedicated indigenous research and development, including extensive environmental testing and performance validation of the Mission Drishti satellite. Lt Gen AK Bhatt (Retd), director general of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), commented, “GalaxEye has achieved what only a few global players have, which is seamlessly combining optical and SAR capabilities on a single platform to enable persistent, all-weather intelligence.” He added, “What stands out is not just the technology, but its broader impact on how downstream applications will increasingly define value in the space economy, particularly in Earth observation, where timely, decision-grade insights are critical.”

The successful launch was also acknowledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hailed it as a testament to the passion of India’s youth for innovation and nation-building. Modi posted on X, “Mission Drishti by GalaxEye marks a major achievement in our space journey. The successful launch of the world’s first OptoSAR satellite and the largest privately-built satellite in India is a testament to our youth’s passion for innovation and nation-building.” Union Minister Jitendra Singh also recognized the launch as a significant milestone, noting the immense potential of young innovators driving national development.

GalaxEye has set an ambitious goal to expand Mission Drishti into a constellation of 10 satellites by 2030, aiming to establish a robust and sovereign Earth observation infrastructure for India.
