EPFO Auto-Refunds Dormant PF Accounts Under ₹1,000

Good news for many of you with old Provident Fund accounts! The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is rolling out an automatic refund system for dormant accounts holding less than ₹1,000.

This means if you have one of the 1.18 lakh accounts that fit this description, you won’t need to file a formal application to get your money back. The EPFO aims to directly return these funds, including any accrued interest, to your bank account.

How Your Funds Will Be Returned

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is upgrading EPFO’s software to make these system-generated refunds possible. This digital process is designed to simplify how you reclaim your long-held savings.

A thorough data validation process is already underway to ensure your funds reach the correct beneficiary. This includes ‘penny drop’ tests and close coordination with various financial institutions to verify KYC compliance and identify the right bank accounts.

This pilot project, which was approved in February 2026, represents a significant shift. The responsibility of reclaiming these smaller, inoperative funds is moving from individual workers like you to the EPFO itself.

What This Means for You

The software testing and full implementation of this new system are expected to be completed by the end of August 2026. So, keep an eye out around that time if you have such an account.

If this initial phase proves successful, the EPFO plans to expand the system to cover an additional 24.76 lakh subscribers. These are individuals with dormant accounts holding balances over ₹1,000, indicating a broader effort to streamline fund returns.

This move is part of the EPFO’s larger strategy to manage millions of inoperative accounts that have accumulated since the introduction of the Universal Account Number (UAN) in 2014. It’s all about making your financial life a little bit easier.
