Bharat1.ai: Anchoring India’s AI Talent & Innovation

Key Highlights

Bharat1.ai launches an AI Superpark in Bengaluru to cultivate a ‘humanity-centric’ AI ecosystem and prevent brain drain, fostering local talent and innovation.

As Indian minds like Aravind Srinivas, cofounder of Perplexity, and Rahul Patil, CTO of Anthropic, lead deeptech and AI ventures in the West, India faces a challenge in retaining its own burgeoning AI talent and companies. To address this, Bharat1.ai has launched an initiative to anchor AI development within the country, starting with an AI Superpark in Bengaluru.

Founded by Subhashish Banerjee, Umakant Soni, and Sireesh Kupendra, Bharat1.ai aims to foster a ‘humanity-centric’ AI ecosystem through strategic partnerships with NVIDIA, local research labs, and academic institutions. The company has established a 500,000 sq ft AI Superpark, designed to support startups, academic bodies like IITs and BITS, and large enterprises, including banks. This facility is the first phase of a larger vision to develop a 70-acre AI city.

The AI Superpark provides critical resources for AI startups, including talent, ecosystem support, capital access, and go-to-market strategies. The founders observed that while India possesses a deep talent pool, gaps in other areas often lead Indian founders to relocate to the US for better opportunities. Bharat1.ai’s approach is to congregate key stakeholders in a single physical location to foster collaboration, access, and scale, with the goal of retaining a significant portion of these companies in India.

The Superpark focuses on stress-testing AI frameworks, developing validation systems for physical and agentic AI, and creating city-scale AI models. It offers high-speed connectivity with low latency, significantly reducing data transfer times crucial for AI development. The facility has already attracted over 25 startups since its February launch, with plans to host more than 60 in the coming months.

A structured membership program, including buildathons and a formal selection process, governs entry into the Superpark, with a preference for deeptech companies. NeuroDX, a startup focused on early detection of neurological disorders using AI, is among the early occupants. The initiative also aims to foster cross-pollination of ideas between startups, researchers, and academicians, simplifying talent acquisition and investor engagement.

The Bharat1.ai founding team brings extensive experience in AI and venture building. Banerjee and Soni previously founded AI Foundry and ARTPARK, a non-profit initiative with IISc supporting Indian AI and robotics startups. Soni also co-founded pi Ventures, an AI-focused early-stage venture fund. Kupendra contributes real estate expertise through his family’s firm, RGA Infra, which manages the RGA Techpark where the Superpark is located.

Looking ahead, Bharat1.ai plans to expand into a full-fledged AI City designed to host 25,000 AI researchers and builders, featuring digital and physical AI twins and enabling a form of Universal Basic Intelligence at city scale. The project anticipates significant investment, with reports suggesting around $650 million for the AI City’s development over the next few years.

This initiative aligns with India’s broader efforts to establish dedicated AI centers, infrastructure, and employment hubs, recognizing the nation’s rapidly growing AI landscape, projected to reach $131.31 billion by 2032. Similar AI city projects are underway in Lucknow, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam, aiming to bolster India’s position as a global AI powerhouse.
