Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has formally requested that US President Donald Trump temporarily suspend tariffs on Colombian products. This appeal follows a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia, causing significant loss of life and widespread damage.

The measure is intended to offer crucial relief to Colombian business owners who are currently facing immense challenges due to the earthquake’s profound effects. President de la Espriella communicated his plea to President Trump via a post on X, detailing their conversation.

Understanding the Earthquake’s Devastating Toll

The earthquake, which occurred on August 10, registered a magnitude of 7.4, making it the second-strongest in Colombia in the last century. Its impact has been severely felt across remote and isolated communities in western Colombia.

The human toll from this natural disaster includes 294 reported deaths. Additionally, more than 3,900 people have sustained injuries, highlighting the extensive physical consequences.
