By ThePip Desk
Coal India Limited’s Q1 FY27 net profit rose 0.6% to ₹8,852 Cr, surpassing estimates. Revenue climbed 7.8% to ₹46,254 Cr, driven by strong realizations despite rising costs.
Coal India Limited (CIL) declared a consolidated net profit of ₹8,852.11 crore for Q1 FY27, marking a marginal 0.6% year-on-year increase that surpassed street estimates. This performance was underpinned by robust realization pricing, driving consolidated revenue from operations up 7.8% to ₹46,254.80 crore, also exceeding expectations.
- Net Profit: ₹8,852.11 crore (up 0.6% YoY)
- Revenue from Operations: ₹46,254.80 crore (up 7.8% YoY)
- EBITDA: ₹12,069 crore (down 4.1%)
- Operating Profit Margins: Contracted to 26.1%
- Raw Coal Production: 169.6 million tonnes (down 7.5% YoY)
Despite the positive bottom-line, operational costs surged by 11.9%, outpacing revenue growth and contributing to a 4.1% dip in EBITDA. The decline in raw coal production also raised minor supply concerns during the quarter.
Operational Dynamics and Future Outlook
CIL’s resilient net profit was primarily attributed to healthy price realizations, mitigating the impact of rising expenses and production shortfalls. The company’s board has also announced an interim dividend of ₹5.50 per share for FY27.
Further value unlocking is planned through the proposed ₹10,000 crore IPO of its subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). Market observers anticipate the earnings beat and attractive dividend yields will stabilize CIL’s share price.
However, sustained re-rating of the stock will necessitate a significant increase in production to effectively offset persistent operational cost inflation. This is crucial as Coal India remains vital to India’s energy grid, especially amidst high power demand.
- Key Risks Identified:
- Continued production decline
- Persistent cost inflation
- Logistical bottlenecks
Coal India’s strategic importance to India’s energy security remains paramount as it navigates these operational and market challenges.
