CLSA Downgrades Meesho Stock to ‘Underperform’, Cites Monetization Issues
By ThePip Desk
CLSA initiates ‘Underperform’ rating on Meesho with a Rs 150 target price, highlighting significant challenges in monetizing its large, low-income user base.
CLSA has initiated coverage on Meesho, the Indian value-commerce platform, assigning an ‘Underperform’ rating and a target price of Rs 150. This valuation suggests a potential 28% decline from Meesho’s stock price of Rs 207 as recorded on August 27.
The brokerage firm’s bearish outlook stems from Meesho’s struggle to effectively monetize its expansive user base, particularly those in smaller cities and rural areas with limited purchasing power. CLSA believes Meesho’s current valuation already incorporates significant improvements in monetization, introducing high risk due to a wide spectrum of potential outcomes.
Monetization Hurdles Identified
- Target Price: Rs 150
- Current Stock Price (August 27): Rs 207
- Implied Downside: 28%
Meesho’s strategic focus on affordability and an asset-light, zero-commission marketplace model has successfully attracted a vast number of users and sellers. However, CLSA argues these very strengths present a significant hurdle for monetization, as the low purchasing power of a substantial user segment restricts potential for higher revenue per user and high-value transactions.
Despite projecting an increase in annual transacting users from 274 million in FY26 to 440 million by FY35, the brokerage questions the platform’s ability to convert this scale into substantial revenue. The report highlights that Meesho has yet to demonstrate significant monetization capabilities beyond its existing logistics and advertising segments.
Competitive Avenues
CLSA identifies several potential monetization avenues for Meesho, including logistics, advertising, payments, lending, financial services, and content. While logistics is already a key revenue driver with anticipated improvements, and advertising revenue could see growth, other areas such as payments, lending, and content face intense competition within the Indian market.
The report concludes that the challenges in converting its large, low-income user base into sustainable revenue streams underscore the ‘Underperform’ rating. Meesho’s path to profitability remains complex given the competitive landscape and inherent user base characteristics.
