Clip Secures US$500 Million for Mi Clip Wallet Launch in Mexico
Mexican fintech company Clip has officially launched “Mi Clip,” a comprehensive digital wallet ecosystem, backed by a significant US$500 million investment from undisclosed investors. This funding round elevates Clip’s valuation to over US$2.5 billion, marking one of Latin America’s largest startup capital injections. The initiative is poised to accelerate digital payment adoption and expand financial inclusion across Mexico’s predominantly cash-reliant economy.
The launch follows regulatory approval granted on May 18 by Mexico’s National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), allowing Clip to operate as an Electronic Payment Funds Institution (IFPE). The strategic development was forged through partnerships with Ant International, Mastercard, and Televisa-Univision, combining global payment infrastructure with extensive media reach to foster financial literacy.
Mi Clip integrates three core products: Wansoft by Clip, Hardware(less) by Clip, and Tap-to-Pay by Clip capabilities for mobile devices. The ecosystem is built upon three strategic pillars: Cash Digitalization and Accessibility, Financial Inclusion Expansion, and Data-Driven Credit Access, directly addressing key challenges in the Mexican financial landscape.
To bolster its accessibility, Clip plans a substantial expansion of its authorized cash deposit network, aiming to increase it from 28,000 to 100,000 locations nationwide. Internally, the platform leverages proprietary artificial intelligence, which has contributed to over 60% of its development code and saved approximately 3,600 labor hours in fraud analysis, enhancing both efficiency and security.
The digital wallet directly targets Mexico’s unique market conditions, where an estimated 85% of purchases below MX$500 are still conducted in cash, and around 40% of adults lack access to formal financial services. The platform is engineered to efficiently handle high-volume payment periods, ensuring robust performance during peak transaction times.
The collaborative efforts underpin Mi Clip’s robust offering. Ant International contributes cross-border digital payments infrastructure, integrating Mi Clip into its global Alipay+ network. Mastercard provides its extensive global payment network capabilities, while Televisa-Univision will utilize its media platforms for educational programming focused on digital financial management and literacy.
Founded in 2012, Clip achieved unicorn status in 2021, underscoring its rapid growth and impact in the fintech sector. The latest US$500 million investment further solidifies its position as a major player, empowering its mission to digitize payments and broaden financial access for millions in Mexico.
